An Kindness of Strangers: The Way a Person I Barely Knew Assisted Me Secure the Job That Altered My Path

During the late 1980s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a companion. Because my friend was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had planned a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the student accommodation, a big multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we got some food, found a table, and began chatting with people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I shared that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – close to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I ought to seek a position with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The man from Iraq walked over to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but immediately explained to my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she said: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his full name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in so many ways. I lacked the confidence or nerve to approach someone at an Ivy League university and request employment. Additionally, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a role in Europe where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
