At least 13 people killed and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.

The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
