Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
