Safety Advice for Defence Staff
In a recently aired interview on LBC, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD staff have been told not to discuss classified information while travelling in China-made cars.
The minister explained that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, however stressed that security is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any car, due to the growing threats of surveillance that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.
When it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using every cars from China, Pollard responded: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

This revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and cause chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.
